Earthbound is a game that was “recently” released on virtual console. I learned about it through the Smash Bros demo, and wanted to play the full game. When it was released, I picked it up on the spot.
The game seems to be a simple rpg, with a not-so-simple story. Ness, a small boy from the american town of Onnet, makes friends and defeats enemies on his quest to defeat giygas with the 8 melodies with the sound stone that he got from an alien named Buzzbu- I’l stop there. The game has a set of quirky characters and unforgettable bosses that will make your day. The encounter system gives you a little time to run from enemies if you are on low health. The fighting system, on the other hand, gives you time to heal yourself if your health bar is draining. Each character has PSI (except for Jeff) to use for attacking or healing. PSI is like magic, but when your all out of PP, you can’t use psi. If you ever want to use it again, you need to find someway to get it back up. I can’t get it back up without a 500$ costing run to the hospital or to the drug store. Earthbound tends to get you stuck on little spots that if you haven’t saved 3 miles back, you have to travel ALL THE WAY BACK TO WHERE YOU WERE FROM ANOTHER TOWN. In the end, I’d give it a 8.9/10.
